Here is a little taste from the section on Biological Sex/Gender in my new Sexual Mindfulness Program….

 

There has been a lot of talk in our culture related to transgender  issues and much of the dialogue is politically motivated and fraught with political correctness. I am totally neutral when it comes to transgender issues as you’ll see in this program and in all of my sexuality-related books.

 

People use the terms biological sex or biological gender interchangeably. I prefer biological sex. This refers to your genetic make-up and all of the things connected to it. Your genetic inheritance from your parents of whomever donated the sperm and egg that created you will influence your sexual identity from conception through death.

 

I do believe that your biological sex plays an important part in your sexual identity throughout your life and will try to present this in the most objective way possible. This influence starts when sperm meets egg and your life was created.  The fact that you are a biological male with an XY chromosome pairing or a biological female with an XX pairing sets the stage for things that go on in your brain and body for the rest of your life.

I do not have time in this book to address the fewer than 5% of the population have chromosomal irregularities like an extra X or Y gene.

Let me give you an example of how being XX or XY affects you across your lifecycle.

Starting at conception your brain gets pre-wired to respond to hormones that will be secreted by your ovaries or testes at three different periods in your life;

  • during you prenatal development
  • at puberty
  • and at menopause if you are a female.

 

During these three periods your pre-wired brain will send hormonal messages to your body to trigger specific physiological actions that are determined by your biological sex. If you are XY, specific male hormones will trigger certain actions. If you are XY specific female hormones will trigger different actions.

 

At 10 weeks your immature ovaries and testes secrete tiny amounts of hormones that cause your genitals to begin to become different (differentiate).

  • If you are a biological male you will begin to grow a penis and testicles.
  • If you are a biological female you will begin to develop ovaries and a vagina.

 

This development continues during your prenatal period and is evident at birth. Nothing much changes during childhood as boys and girls are pretty similar physically.

 

During puberty the effects of hormones kick in again and your development as a male or female continues:

  • genitals reach their full adult size.
  • fertility begins.
  • males develop male secondary sex characteristics.
  • females develop male secondary sex characteristics.

 

The role of biological sex continues throughout your adulthood with some of the key differences being that men have a constant hormone pattern and women have a cyclic hormone cycles (hence the term menstrual cycle).

  • cyclic hormone cycles trigger menstruation in women.

 

Lastly, at menopause women’s ovaries stop producing eggs meaning they stop having their periods and are no longer capable of getting pregnant. Men never stop producing sperm but will have much lower sperm counts the longer they live.

 

That is the biological reality of being a genetic male or female. These biological differences are perceived differently by men and women.

 

If you are a man you probably have very different thoughts, feelings, self-talk, and mental images about your  biological sex than your sister, mother, or female partner have about theirs. For example, as a man:

  • I have never experienced my period every month.
  • I have never had to make the decision to carry a baby for 9 months and deal with the demands that puts on my body.
  • I have never had to think about losing my fertility or go through tings like hot flashes etc.

 

My wife has experienced all of those things and it is a major reason we see the world differently. There is no way I will ever be able to see the world through her eyes or she through mine.

 

This is not a sexist thing to say. The reality of our biological sex makes us different and those differences begin at conception and end at death. Different doesn’t mean better or worse, just different.

 

Sexual mindfulness helps you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, self talk, and mental images related to your evolving biological sex. In this section of the program I use fun exercises to help you become more aware of what your mind is telling you about your evolving biological sex.
